Grazie Daniele. It seems like so little to say to a man who dedicated his entire career to the club we support. But in the end, it’s all we can say. Grazie Daniele, again and again.
Daniele De Rossi plays his last game for AS Roma today. After 18 seasons, 616 appearances, 63 goals, and countless roars which made us all roar back, the end hit us like a slap in the face. It still feels surreal, and the anger is still too raw, but that is for another day.
Francesco Totti will always be my favourite player. Ask any Roma fan and the answer will always be the same, every single time. Totti is Totti, it is a given. But in many ways Daniele De Rossi is a player you can identify more with. There is a connection born from the passion and spirit he displays every time he puts on the jersey as Roma’s number one fan. De Rossi had to work for it, to fight for it, and he fought and battled at every single moment, whereas Totti was born with a divine talent which we will likely never see again.
Designing one final graphic for one last game seems like an impossible task. There were so many iconic photos and so many unforgettable memories for the man who celebrated like no other, it would take a lifetime to perfect. Because that is what De Rossi gave to Roma – and will continue to do so – a lifetime, time and time again. What he represents is what makes AS Roma special, it is what makes it so unique. As he said in his farewell letter, “no one will ever love you more than I do”.
